Introduction to IRIS

A joint research centre combining the EHESS, the CNRS, Inserm, and the University of Sorbonne Paris Nord, the Institut de recherche interdisciplinaire sur les enjeux sociaux (IRIS) (Institute of Interdisciplinary Research on Social Issues) brings together around sixty researchers and more than 100 doctoral and postdoctoral candidates in anthropology, sociology, history, law, political science, public health, and forensic medicine. Their works explore the social, political, and moral issues of contemporary societies in France, Europe, the Americas, Africa, Asia, and Oceania. The two main offices of the Institute are located on the campuses of the EHESS in Paris and the University of Paris 13 in Bobigny.

Created in 2007 by Didier Fassin and Alban Bensa, IRIS (UMR8156—U997) was born from the fusion of two research units: the Centre de recherche sur la santé, le social et le politique (Centre for Research on Health, Society, and Politics) and the research centre Genèse et transformation des mondes sociaux (Origins and Transformation of Social Worlds). Isabelle Coutant has been its director since 1 January 2024 and Carine Vassy is the associate director.

IRIS is one of the founding partners of the TEPSIS Laboratory of Excellence (Transformations de l’État, politisation des sociétés et institution du social) (Transformations of the State, Politicization of Societies, and Institution of the Social). Each year, the Institute organises a campaign to support candidates of the competitive examinations for research fellows of the CNRS and Inserm.
