Carolyn Sargent a principalement travaillé sur la relation entre le genre et la santé, avec un intérêt particulier pour la reproduction, la relation patient-médecin, les parcours thérapeutiques, les enjeux éthiques de la santé, et la prise en charge des femmes issues de populations marginalisées. Elle a travaillé en Afrique de l’ouest (Mali, Bénin) et en Jamaïque. Ces sept dernières années, elle a conduit ses enquêtes en France sur la reproduction et les représentations de la famille chez les migrants de la région du Fleuve Sénégal résidant aujourd’hui à Paris. Plus récemment, elle a centré son analyse sur la manière dont l’héritage colonial et l’économie mondiale ont instauré des relations d’inégalité qui influencent les politiques et les institutions s’adressant à cette population. Elle étudie notamment comment les femmes — en tant que migrantes, épouses, et mères — gèrent ces relations d’inégalité au quotidien. Du point de vue théorique, sa réflexion porte sur les concepts d’agentivité, de structure, et de résistance. Elle a également exploré l’influence de l’Islam sur le discours des hommes migrants — notamment les résidents des foyers, les débats sur l’autonomie des femmes en Europe, et le pouvoir de décision des femmes en ce qui concerne la fécondité et les relations de genre.
