Genocide and Mass Violence : diagnosis, treatment, and recovery ?

Humanities, social and medical sciences facing extreme violence

Aix Marseille University, Medical Faculty – Campus Timone, 27 boulevard Jean Moulin 13385 Marseille cedex 5

The International Network of Genocide Scholars (INoGS) was founded on 14 January 2005 in Berlin in order to provide genocide studies with a non-partisan community in which to research and present analysis on any aspect of (individually defined) genocide studies. Since our founding, we have maintained support of research-led analysis rather than politically defined policy agendas. https://inogs.com/

For more than 70 years, academics, practitioners, and researchers from a variety of disciplines have addressed the issue of genocide and mass violence using a wide range of empirical and theoretical approaches, exploring case studies throughout history and numerous past and present events or processes around the world. Interdisciplinary research across humanities, legal and social sciences, as well as comparison, have thus characterized genocide studies.

However, even if extreme violence is relevant to various medical fields such as psychology, psychiatry and forensic anthropology, dialogue between medical sciences and humanities and social sciences has been slow to develop. The 6th INoGS Global Conference, to be held at the Medical Faculty of Aix-Marseille University (France) on 4-7 July 2018 and entitled “Genocide and Mass Violence : diagnosis, treatment, and recovery ?“, therefore seeks to open new avenues for research on extreme violence while stimulating interdisciplinary exchanges between the humanities, social and medical sciences. The early detection and prevention of mass violence represents indeed a global challenge for each and every one of these fields of knowledge.
